Have you noticed how hard it is to recruit great fundraising volunteers?
In our pre-campaign coaching, Gail and I see that it’s more and more challenging to get busy, capable, well-connected volunteers – the very kind you want – to agree to chair your campaign or even to serve on your campaign committees.
That’s why once you’ve got the right volunteers on board, you MUST make them feel great about their work with your campaign. Don’t wait until their job is done to appreciate them. Start right from the get-go! Start NOW.
If your volunteers feel great about their work with you, they’ll tell their friends and other people will want to get involved.
3 Ways to Make Your Volunteers Feel Loved
Here are three simple, but all-important things you can do to make your campaign volunteers happy that they agreed to serve.
1. Appreciate them in many little ways.
In every communication you have with a campaign volunteer, let them know you appreciate their work. You can do this quite simply, but you should do it again and again.
For example, you might end an email with this phrase: “I appreciate you.” These small, genuine expressions pack a surprising wallop.
Diana, one of our wonderful coaching clients, often ends her emails to me after one of our coaching calls with that phrase. “Andrea, I appreciate you.” And that simple statement always makes me feel good.
2. Notice what they do for your campaign and let them know.
Push yourself to become aware of the many things your volunteers do for the campaign and let them know you notice.
The simple practice of noticing what your volunteers do and letting them know – with an email or a call or just a comment – will make a big difference over time.
Jerry, I saw you talking so eloquently to people at the party last night about the campaign. Thanks so much for keeping it front and center! I appreciate you.
Small gestures like this that grow out of paying attention to people make a big difference.
3. Send occasional tokens of your appreciation.
Don’t wait until the end of your campaign to send something special. And while the holidays are a wonderful time for gift giving, you can do it out of the blue, with a little note of appreciation.
A Wonderful Gift Suggestion for Your Campaign Volunteers
The very best gift for campaign volunteers — and most everyone else — is an amazing little book, Inspiring Generosity, by our friend and colleague, Barbara Bonner. It’s a book of inspirational quotations about generosity that’s beautifully designed.
We order these books by the dozen and keep them on hand to give away to people who help us. You can do the same!
Here’s a quotation from the book — it’s one of many great quotes:
Happiness exists on earth, and it is won through prudent exercise of reason, knowledge of the harmony of the universe, and constant practice of generosity. –Jose Marti
Appreciating people is one of the fundamental ways you can be generous, in your campaign and in your life.
Practice the generosity of appreciation with your campaign volunteers. They’ll feel great and so will you!
