Are You Too Busy to Plan?
Sounds silly, doesn’t it, that people are too busy to take the all-important steps to prepare for a capital campaign. But that’s what happens again and again.
Rather than doing the planning and preparation they need to set their organizations up for a successful campaign, they call a consultant to do a feasibility study that they think will somehow magically take care of it.
It seems like the right thing to do. After all, capital campaign consultants are experts! But when called in to help, few consultants are going to say:
Sorry, you’re not ready yet. Before we do a feasibility study, here are the things you should do.
Instead, they’re likely to dive right in and give you a proposal for a feasibility study to test an organization’s readiness for a campaign. And all too often, the results are disappointing. Rather than getting you ready, you’ll get a report that highlights all of the reasons the proposed campaign is too big and your organization isn’t ready for a campaign.
I understand all too well.
Busy, Busy, Busy!
You’re busy. Very busy! Just running the on-going fundraising program is big job and you probably don’t have enough staff to do even that the way you’d like to.
So when your Director and Board Chair tell you that they want to start a capital campaign to build a new building or start a new program or whatever, you’re not likely to say, “Good idea. Let’s take some time to get ready. I’ll lead the effort.”
Honestly, not only do you have no time, you don’t have much experience. If you’re like most people, you don’t have a clear sense of what it would take to become fully ready for a successful campaign.
So you start calling capital campaign consultants. And chances are good you’ll spend lots of money for disappointing results.

Don’t Start a Capital Campaign If You’re Not Ready
Here are five questions to ask yourself. If you answer no to most of them, then you’ve got some important work to do before calling a consultant.
- Do you know what your campaign will raise money for and how much it will cost?
- Can you explain why a campaign will make a big and exciting difference in your ability to further your organization’s mission?
- Can you make a list of the people who are likely to give the top ten gifts to your campaign? Are the engaged and involved in your organization and your campaign plans yet?
- Does your board know what the campaign will be about and are they excited?
- Do you have adequate time to devote to planning and implementing a capital campaign?
