We all know that involvement breeds investment.
So why not assemble a group of the most powerful, wealthiest, wisest and most influential volunteers you have to work with you on a campaign plan?
1. A Campaign Planning Committee Sets the Tone.
The people on your capital campaign planning committee will set the tone and the standard for your entire campaign. Their involvement lends credibility to the campaign right from the start. Having them on board will make it easier for you to attract engaged volunteers as well as donors throughout the campaign.
Some of these individuals may continue to be involved on the campaign steering committee, but some may not.
Establishing a campaign planning committee as distinct from a steering committee or campaign committee gives you a special opportunity.
You can invite people to help shape the campaign over a few short meetings without asking them to join a committee that will meet for the entire duration of the campaign.
2. It’s is a Wonderful Cultivation Tool.
This more limited involvement may enable you to recruit some people who wouldn’t be willing to serve on a committee that is responsible for the full extent of the campaign.
If you can involve some key people on a planning committee, the planning process will give you a chance to inform them about your campaign, gain the benefits of their advice and wisdom, and add their names to your list of campaign volunteers.
3. Volunteer Participation will Lead to a Gift.
Everyone you ask to serve as a campaign volunteer should be willing to make a generous gift to the campaign. But you ought to be up front about that from the get-go. No one likes to be surprised about a thing like that.
So be sure to tell those who volunteer on any of your capital campaign committees that they’ll be expected to give when you ask them to serve.
I promise you, if someone turns you down because they don’t want to make a campaign gift, you don’t want them on your committee!
The gifts your campaign volunteers make to the campaign will play a powerful — even critical — role in getting your campaign off to a great start.
